SECRETS - PART FIFTY-EIGHT

Bill patted Sam on the back as he passed by him. Bill came into the room and pulled a chair next to the one Susannah was sitting in by Todd's bed.

"What just happened here?" Bill asked. He was horrified by what he had just heard.

"Tom's nightmare turned into a flashback," Susannah answered.

"I know you explained to me that they actually experience things that happened to them over and over again, but I could never imagine it would be like that. It was like watching him being beaten and burned and not be able to do anything. My God! I'm a cop! I wanted to grab his father off of him and throw his sorry ass into jail, but the man is already dead!" Bill was exasperated. His anger and frustration made him want to punch a hole in the wall.

Susannah understood the confusing thoughts and feelings Bill was having. She knew it was hard to separate Tom's very real flashback from something that was not really happening now. Impossible for Tom, and difficult for an observer. She also understood Bill's need to "get the bad guy," and Peter was as bad as they come.

"Do you think Peter raped and sodomized the mother?" Bill asked.

"Yes, I think he did, on that night and many others. I think many of the alter's saw it happen on different occasions," Susannah answered.

"I know the mother failed to protect him and abandoned him, but you have to feel for her," Bill stated.

"I do. My heart breaks for the life Barbara had. It just breaks a whole lot more for her child," Susannah admitted, as she stroked Todd's head.

*************************************************************************************************************

Tom was still out the next morning. He was sluggish and a little disoriented from the sedative the night before, but he was calm. When Susannah got there, Viki was with him. Sam had gone home to change. Viki was trying to coax him to eat a little more of the grilled cheese sandwich that was in front of him. Only a couple of bites had been taken. She had a little better luck with the chocolate shake. Tom continued to drink it as Viki held the straw to his lips.

"Good morning. How is everyone today?" Susannah asked cheerfully.

"We're doing just fine, aren't we sweetheart?" Viki stroked Tom's head and answered for both of them.

Tom's eyes still looked a little glassy and dazed. His reactions were slow. It took him nearly a minute to absorb Viki's question and nod.

"Is my dad still here?" Tom asked Susannah, surprising her.

"Honey, your dad isn't here. He was never here. Tom," Susannah spoke slowly and gently, "your dad is dead. Honey, do you remember that?"

Tom looked even more confused. "No . . . he used to be dead . . . I think . . . b-but he was here. I saw him . . . I think."

Tom was starting to get agitated. He was hitting the inside of his wrists into the side of his head. Susannah held on to his hands. "It gets all mixed up." Tom cried. Tears started to flow. "I saw my dad! He was here. He hurt my mom and . . . He was here! Honest! I'm not lying. I don't want him to be here. Make him go away. NO DON’T! He'll hurt you. I don't want him to hurt you. I want Coach. I want Coach!" Tom wailed.

"Sam will be right back Tom. I promise," Viki soothed. She put her arm around him.

"Coach will make him go away. He won't let him hurt us. Please get Coach," Tom begged and continued to cry.

"Tom listen to me," Susannah took his hands in hers. "You had a bad dream last night and your dad was in the dream. He wasn't really here. You just think you saw him because you were dreaming about him."

Tom was getting even more confused. He didn't know when it was. He looked down at his wrist to see the watch Susannah had bought him. When he saw his naked wrist he panicked. "Where's my special watch! The one you bought me that talks! Where is it! Where is it!"

"Shhhhh, it's in your room, baby. It's safe. Do you want me to get it for you?" Viki offered.

"I want to know that it's now. If it's now then my dad is dead and he can't come here," Tom wept.

"I'll go get it. I'll be right back. Okay sweetheart?" Viki said as she stood up and cupped his chin in her hand.

"NOOOO!" Tom cried out. He pulled one of his hands away from Susannah's hold and grabbed Viki's hand. "Don't go! If my dad is out there he'll hurt you too. I want Coach!"

"Hey Boomer, I'm right here. What's the problem?" Sam asked as he entered the room and heard Tom crying out for him.

"Don't let my dad hurt Viki and Doctor Hanen. He was here and now he's not . . . but I think he still is because it's not now . . . I don't know . . . It's all mixed up in my brain."

Tom tried to hit the side of his head again. Once more Susannah held his hands down. Sam was getting frightened. Tom wasn't making sense. He was sounding so confused. Sam cast a quick look in Susannah's direction and then sat on the bed next to Tom and took him in his arms.

"Shhhhh Boomer, it's all right. I won't let anyone hurt Viki or Doctor Hanen. Tom, your dad wasn't here. I promise you."

Yes he was. I saw him. I saw him! I'm not lying! Don't let him hurt Viki and Doctor Hanen! Don't . . ."

"All right Boomer. All right. All right, shhhh. I promise that if your dad ever tries to hurt Viki or Doctor Hanen I'll stop him. I swear to you. I won't ever let anyone hurt any of you."

Sam felt Tom start to relax in his arms. "Coach, how come it gets all mixed up?" Tom whimpered as tears slowly trickling down his cheeks.

Sam looked at Susannah for an answer.

"Honey," Susannah began and started to rub Tom's back. "Sometimes dreams seem very real, and when we wake up it's hard to tell the difference between what's real and what isn't. Also, sometimes when someone hurts someone a lot, it's hard for the person who got hurt to remember that they wouldn’t be hurt anymore. They sometimes think the person who hurt them is still doing it. It's nothing to be afraid of. It happens to a lot of people. I promise you Tom. We will never, ever let your dad or anyone hurt any of you. And I promise no one will hurt us either."

Tom snuggled even closer to Sam. He rested his head against him. "It's safe. It's safe. It's safe," Tom kept whispering to himself.

"It's safe Boomer. It really is safe," Sam confirmed and hugged Tom as tight as possible.

Tom was getting more relaxed as Sam held him and gently rocked him. Viki came back. She was glad to see that Sam had arrived. She handed Tom his watch. He immediately activated the sound and he heard the watch give the date and time. In a relieved voice, Tom declared, "It's now. It's now." He even drank a little more of the chocolate shake when Viki held the straw to his lips.

"Tom," Susannah asked, "How would you like to go back to your own room this morning?"

"Are my video games there?" Tom asked hopefully.

"They sure are bud and the art room and play room are on that floor and all your puzzles and crayons and drawing pads and everything is there. It's all just waiting for you to come back," Sam spoke enthusiastically.

"Can I go to the playroom and the art room and your office?" Tom asked Susannah. He was yawning. They knew he needed to sleep a little more.

"Sure you can, honey, after you rest for a few days. You can try to get out of bed later today if you feel up to it," Susannah assured him.

Sam continued to rock Tom until he fell asleep. Tom was asleep for about an hour and a half when he was taken back to his room. The transport went smoothly. Tom was still half asleep when they lifted him on to the gurney and brought him back to his own bed. He became a little more aware of his surroundings as Viki was tucking him in.

"Are my games here?" Tom asked sleepily.

"Sure Boomer, here," Sam handed him one of his video games.

Tom tried to play with it but his eyes were a little blurred from all the medication and the residual weakness caused his arms and hands to tremble as he tried to play. They could see he was getting frightened and frustrated. "Dumb game! It won't stay still so I can see it and hold it." Tom threw it down on the bed.

"I'll get you a puzzle, sweetheart," Viki offered and headed for the toy box.

"Honey, listen to me. It may take about a week before your arms and hands get strong enough for you to play with this," Susannah picked up the video game and gently informed him. "You have to get your strength back."

Susannah was surprised when he grabbed the video game out of her hand and threw it on the floor.

"I HATE TODD'S BODY! I HATE TODD'S BODY! IT'S ALWAYS SICK AND HURT!" Thomas shouted and pounded his fists into Todd's stomach and chest.

"No! Thomas stop! Viki spoke loudly and firmly as Sam and Susannah each grabbed one of his arms.

"I HATE BEING IN TODD'S BODY. I WANT TO BE IN MY OWN BODY LIKE WHEN I'M INSIDE. WHY DO I HAVE TO USE TODD'S BODY HERE!" Thomas shouted, as he struggled against their hold.

Glen and Sean, two psych techs in the step down unit, and two nurses approached the bed when they saw Thomas was losing control. Susannah held up her hand to let them know to stand back for now.

"Honey, I want you to calm down and I will explain why to you," Susannah said firmly, as she continued to hold on to his arm.

"Come on Boomer, relax. We're not going to let you hurt yourself," Sam declared. Thomas continued to struggle.

"Honey, listen to me. I promise Todd's body will get stronger, but you have to help. Will you help?" Susannah gave him a choice.

Thomas started to calm down a little. His anger was slowly dissipating. "I can help make Todd's body strong enough to be able to go to the playroom?" Thomas asked.

"You sure can," Susannah confirmed and then asked, "Honey, if we let go of your arms do you promise to stay safe and not to hit yourself?"

Thomas nodded.

Susannah and Sam let go. He pulled his legs into a cross-legged position and folded his arms around each other and looked Susannah in the eyes, waiting for her to continue.

"First of all," Susannah began, "You can't hurt your body or Todd's body in any way. I know you don't feel pain, but if someone else uses Todd's body or he uses it himself they will feel the pain of anything you do. Thomas, do you understand that?"

"I like it when you call me, honey," Thomas reminded Susannah. He moved closer to her.

"I'm sorry honey. I'll try to remember," Susannah apologized and smiled at him. Susannah went on. "Next, you need to remember that once you can get out of bed or when you stand up from a chair you have to get up very slowly and you sit on the edge of the bed or chair for a couple of minutes before you stand up."

"How come?" Thomas asked.

"Because Todd's body gets dizzy if one of you gets up too quickly and if you fall, Todd can get hurt and you would all have to spend even more time in bed." Susannah looked at him. He seemed to be absorbing what she was saying so she continued. "It would really help make Todd's body strong if you would eat. One of the reasons Todd's body gets weak is because none of you like to eat anymore."

"I like orange soda. I'll eat orange soda," Thomas volunteered.

"Honey, I know soda tastes good, but it isn't food. How about orange juice or an orange, will you eat that?"

"Mama likes orange juice. I'll eat orange juice," Thomas agreed. Susannah wanted to hug him to her, but she kept her distance.

"Would you like some French toast. Remember, you like the way they make it here?" Viki proposed.

Thomas thought back but couldn't remember. "Mama makes French toast," he informed them again.

"I know, sweetheart. That's why I thought you might like some?" Viki reached out to stroke his head but pulled her hand back. She knew he wouldn't like that.

"Okay," Thomas agreed.

"I will see to it that you get you some French toast and orange juice right away," Susannah announced and asked one of the techs to order some for him.

"Maybe Mama can bring me some when she comes to visit me?" Thomas asked hopefully.

"Honey I don't think Mama can come to visit you," Susannah cautiously told him. She watched his reaction carefully.

"Is she sick?" Thomas' bottom lip and chin began to quiver.

"No honey, she's not sick. Chicago is very, very far away from here. Do you know where we are?" Susannah hoped to redirect his thoughts.

Thomas shook his head.

"We are in Llanview, Pennsylvania. Do you know where Pennsylvania is?" Susannah asked.

"Can I show you? I'm good at geography," Thomas was proud of his skills with a map.

"Sure you can," Sam answered and handed Thomas a drawing pad and some crayons.

Thomas drew the outline for a map of the United States and wrote Chicago and Pennsylvania in exactly the right places. "I know where everything is. Do you want to see Montana and Wyoming? They have real cowboys there!" Thomas offered enthusiastically.

"Go ahead, sweetheart. Show us. We'd love to see it." Viki encouraged.

They watched as he filled those in in the appropriate place. "You want to see where Grandpa Ed lives?" They nodded eagerly and he showed them Florida. "I know all the capitals too," Thomas proudly started to name the capitals of every state they mentioned. He didn't miss one.

Susannah was happy that the geography lesson he was giving everyone had taken his mind off of Mama coming to visit. It seemed that on top of everything else, a part of Todd was a whiz at geography.

Thomas would laugh and giggle whenever Sam and Viki would feign shock at him knowing some of the more obscure capitals. "See, I told you I know 'em all," Thomas pointed out. They were so happy to hear him laugh and to see his anger fade and a smile replace it.

When the food arrived, Susannah helped Thomas to swing his legs over the side of the bed and adjusted the table with the food tray on it over his lap. Thomas had trouble with the plastic utensils because Todd's arms and hands were still weak.

"I can do it. I'm not a baby!" Thomas protested when Viki offered to help him cut the French toast.

"You can use your fingers," Susannah suggested. "It will be okay until your hands are stronger."

"My hands are strong. Todd's hands are sick!" Thomas reminded her with just a touch of anger.

"I'm sorry, honey. You're right. Todd's hands are weak, but since you have to use them, why don't you just pick the food up with your fingers.

"No! I'm not like Todd. Mama wouldn't like it if she saw the way Todd eats."

"Well, Todd's hands are not strong enough to use the utensils. It will be okay, honey," Susannah explained.

Thomas looked at her and blinked a few times.

"No, ma'am, he can't do that. His mama wouldn't like it."

Susannah knew that Lisa had just come out.

"Lisa! Hello sweetheart. Is Sarah here too?" Susannah asked.

"I'm here!" Sarah called out.

"We do everything together, ma'am," Lisa reminded her.

"It feels funny," Sarah complained. She looked uncomfortable.

"What does, honey?" Susannah inquired.

"Everything. My arms and head and legs, they all feel extra tired." Sara looked like she was going to cry.

"Lisa," Susannah asked, "Do you feel extra tired too?"

"I'm afraid so, ma'am, but I wasn't complaining. Really I wasn't."

"Lisa, I want you to tell me right away if you don't feel well or if something is bothering you. It's very important that you tell me or someone else right away if you are feeling bad or different in some way. Lisa, do you promise to tell if you don't feel all right from now on?" Susannah pressed on this important issue.

"I don't want you to think we're too much trouble, ma'am," Lisa admitted nervously.

"We would never, ever think that. You girls will make us very happy if you tell us just what you are feeling and thinking. No matter what it is," Susannah encouraged disclosures. "Okay Lisa?" Susannah pushed.

"Okay ma'am," Lisa agreed. She still sounded nervous.

"Sarah, do you agree to that too?" Susannah wanted to make sure.

"Uh huh. I already told you I don't feel good. Was I being good?" Sarah agreed and then asked.

"Yes Sarah. You were being very good," Susannah praised.

Susannah got a big smile out of Sarah and a small anxious smile out of Lisa.

"Now let me explain why you both feel extra tired," Susannah put her arm around them as she continued. "Todd was sick a few days ago and his body is still very weak. Also, we had to give him a lot of medicine and some of that medicine makes his body kind of dizzy and sleepy. You girls are feeling that because you are in Todd's body. Once he's . . . "

"NO! NO! NO!" Sarah cried out. She pushed away the table, causing the tray to fall on the floor.

"Sarah what is it? Honey what's the matter?" Susannah asked. She was shocked by her reaction.

"I'll clean up the mess, ma'am," Lisa sighed. She started to stand up.

"No! Lisa, don't!" Susannah called out. She pushed Lisa back against the bed just as she was about to fall.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," Lisa whispered. She was terrified by her inability to stand.

"It's all right sweetheart," Susannah soothed. She gently stroked back the hair out of Lisa's face. "Girls, it's nothing to be afraid of. Todd's legs are not strong enough for him to stand by himself yet. They will get stronger soon."

Sarah put her feet flat on the bed and hugged her knees to her chest.

"Sarah, is that you?" Susannah guessed.

She nodded.

"Sarah," Susannah asked softly, "Can you tell me why it upset you so much when I was explaining to you why you both feel a little sick?"

"It's not my body. It's not! Todd's body is ugly and he's got a boy thing. It's not my body. I'm a girl!"

Susannah exchanged looks with Sam and Viki.

"Lisa, do you feel the same way?" Susannah asked, then added, "It's all right to tell me what you're thinking and feeling Lisa. I want you to."

"Yes, ma'am, I have my own body too. I don't have a boy's body either," Lisa admitted and then turned to Sarah and scolded, "Sarah, you made a big mess. Mama will be upset if you don't apologize to Doctor Hanen and to Sam and Viki."

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to spill the food," Sarah apologized. She looked up at Susannah. Tears filled her eyes.

"There is no problem with that girls. It was an accident. I'll call housekeeping and they’ll get it cleaned up in no time." Now that they both seemed calmer, Susannah redirected the subject back to the girl’s perception of themselves. "So, you girls don't use Todd's body when you're out?"

Sarah shook her head and Lisa confirmed, "No ma'am, we don't."

"Girls, then why do you think it is that you both feel sick now?" Susannah asked gently.

"We caught it from Todd," Sarah reasoned, making Viki, Susannah and Sam laugh.

"Sarah, Lisa, do you think Goodone and Carol wouldn't love you if you had a boy's body?" Susannah pressed.

"Mama loves us best because we're girls," Lisa affirmed.

"Why do you think that?" Susannah pushed.

"She told us," Sarah admitted.

"SARAH! That's supposed to be a secret," Lisa scolded. She was clearly upset at her sister.

"Hhhha," Sarah breathed in sharply and covered her mouth with the palm of her hand. "I'm sorry. I forgot." Sarah looked at Lisa. Her chin started to quiver. She asked her sister, "Do you think mama will be mad at me?"

"Mama doesn't get mad at us but she will be upset," Lisa confirmed.

Sarah started to cry. Susannah put her arm around both of them. "It's all right. I'm sure Carol will understand. If she would like to come out and talk to me I can explain it to her," Susannah offered, trying to coax Carol out. Sarah dried her eyes and calmed down. Susannah pushed forward. "Lisa, why is your mama liking you girls best a secret?"

"Mama doesn't want the boys to feel bad. She loves them a lot, but us more. Mama won't ever send us away."

"The boys have to do bad things but we don't have to because we're girls," Sarah confessed.

"Sarah hush!" Lisa put a stop to what Sarah was about to tell. Lisa sounded frightened.

Sarah pulled her knees to her chest again.

"It's okay to talk about anything here. It's safe to tell what kind of bad things the boys had to do. Nothing can hurt you anymore, girls."

The girls looked at each other as if they were trying to figure out if what Susannah had told them was really true.

"Girls," Susannah began cautiously, "Did Todd's daddy ever hurt either of you in any way?"

Lisa and Sarah looked at each other again. "Goodone's our papa now, ma'am. He loves us very much. He would never hurt us," Lisa answered for both of them, avoiding the question.

Susannah let it go. She did not want to stress Todd's body. "Is Todd with Goodone now?" Susannah asked.

"I believe so, ma'am. Papa hasn't been around for a while so I guess he's with Todd in the secret place."

"The secret place?" Susannah pressed.

"It's where Todd hides. Only Papa knows where it is. Even Mama don't know. Thomas gets real mad when Papa goes to be with Todd, so Mama gives him extra hugs." Sarah explained.

"Girls, do you know Andy?"

"Yes, ma'am, we do," Lisa confirmed and she twirled her hair around her finger.

Susannah realized she did this when she was nervous or uncomfortable. "Does Andy stay with Carol and Goodone when he's inside?" Susannah asked.

"They're his mama and papa too. They love Andy and take care of him," Lisa explained.

Sam, Viki and Susannah all felt some relief at the knowledge that Andy did have parents to love him when he was inside, but were once again left upset when Sarah blurted out, "But mama and papa don't want us to play with Andy."

Suddenly both girls looked up and then at each other.

"Mama's calling us, ma'am. We have to go back now."

"Wait girls. Do you think your mama could come out and say hello to us?" Susannah pushed.

Sarah and Lisa exchanged looks again.

"We're not sure." Lisa said.

"Can your mama hear me?" Susannah asked.

"I think so," Sarah guessed. They had never been asked this before and were not sure.

"Carol, if you can hear me, will you come out and say hello to us?" Susannah coaxed.

"It's all right girls. Go on inside now. I'll be right there." Carol spoke softly. She looked at her daughters lovingly. They noticed that Carol spoke with a very charming southern accent. "Hello Doctor Hanen, Mrs. Carpenter, Mr. Rappaport. It is a pleasure to meet you. I certainly appreciate the kindness you all have shown my children."

"We love them very much," Viki responded.

"Yes, I know you do. It is hard for them when they are away from their father and me. It does my heart good to know that, these days, they are loved on the outside."

"Carol, how old was Todd when you came to help take care of the children?" Susannah asked.

"I have been here since Todd was ten years old," Carol answered without hesitation.

"Did you come out when Todd's mother sent him away from the summer house and back to his mother?"

"I was there to take care of Todd when he came home. So was Goodone. We will never turn our backs on our children," Carol stated firmly.

Susannah wanted to ask her what happened to Todd when Peter got him back home, after he had run away to his stepfather's summer house, but she was afraid that if the memory of that came now, it would be far too stressful for Todd's heart. Instead she asked. "Do you consider Goodone to be your husband?"

"No! Goodone would never hurt me. He is not my husband. We do discuss what is best for our children. Goodone would never hurt the children or me. He is very kind and a true gentleman."

They realized that Carol equated being a wife with being abused.

"Carol," Susannah began, "Not all husbands beat their wives. A man can get married and still be kind and gentle."

"If you say so, Doctor Hanen," Carol responded politely.

Susannah knew that Carol did not really accept what she had just said, but was too polite to disagree. "Your children have wonderful manners, Carol. They are very sweet and lovable. You've done a very good job with them," Susannah complimented her.

"Well, thank you. I love them very much. I want them to be polite. I want you all to like them. I wouldn't want you to send them away. That would just break their little hearts."

"Carol, we would never send them away. We love Todd and everyone who lives inside him. We love having them all with us," Sam informed her.

"I know you believe that Mr. Rappaport, but people change. They say they love someone and then they just stop. They discover something that makes them stop loving a person and then they send them away. I like to make sure my children behave so that doesn't happen."

"Carol," Viki walked over to the bed and took Carol's hand, "You know that I am Todd's sister?"

"Yes Mrs. Carpenter. I do know that," Carol affirmed.

"Carol," Viki continued, "I love Todd as if he were my child. I would never, under any circumstances, turn my back on him. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, in this universe that would make me or Sam or Doctor Hanen or even my son Kevin send Todd or any of you away from us. Carol you have my word."

"Thank you, Mrs. Carpenter. I do know you love Todd and the children very much, but as I said to Mr. Rappaport. People change. What you are saying is true. It is true for now, for this moment in time. Even mothers make all kinds of promises that they don't keep, but for the love you have shown my children, so far, I am truly grateful. It was a pleasure to meet you all. I'm afraid I must be getting back now. Oh, before I go, I just want to apologize for Thomas. He gets really angry sometimes. I am as firm with him as I can be and so is his papa. He is just so angry. When we explain to him that his behavior can get him and all the children sent away, it just makes him more upset and angrier. Please, don't hold his behavior against him or the other children."

"Carol, we love Thomas very much. We understand why he is angry and we don't blame him at all," Sam reassured her.

"We love spending time with Thomas," Viki added.

"Carol, can I ask you just one more question before you go," Susannah asked.

Carol hesitated for a moment. She seemed to be listening for something. "All right. The children seem to be quiet. I can stay for another minute or two."

"Carol, do you love Andy?"

"Well of course I love Andy. He is one of our children now," Carol answered. They could see she was surprised by the question.

"Why is it that you don't want the other children to play with Andy?" Susannah asked bluntly.

"It would put them in danger, Doctor Hanen. It would put them in danger."

"It cowd. No cwothes."

They all realized a switch had occurred and realized the unnamed baby personality, who spoke about being locked away, naked, had come back.

Susannah, Viki and Sam looked at each other.

"No toys, dey gone way. Daddy tooked. Cowd," this very young alter was shivering.

Sam wrapped a blanket around him. "Is that better?" he asked.

"Who you?" he asked fearfully. His face scrunched up and tears filled his eyes

"This is Sam. He loves Todd very much," Susannah explained.

"Who Todd?" he asked.

"You live inside of Todd's body," Susannah again explained.

"No, I wive in a house. Mommy and daddy and me."

"Honey, do you have a name?" Susannah asked.

He shrugged his shoulders.

"Do you know how old you are?" Susannah tried again.

He shook his head.

"Are you a big boy or a very little boy?" Susannah asked, simulating positions up to her waist or down to the top of her knee.

"Wittle boy," he answered, choosing the smaller of the two positions.

Susannah assumed this alter to be somewhere between two and three years old.

He suddenly realized he had a blanket on him. He pulled it off. "No banky! Bad boy! No banky! No cwothes! No dwink!" His tone was apparently mimicking Peter's tone. His face scrunched up again and this time some tears fell. "No dwink, I dirsty."

Susannah remembered the last time he was out he was afraid to drink because the water had been taken away as part of his punishment and also so he wouldn't have to urinate. "Honey, it's okay to drink if you are thirsty. No one will punish you. If you have to pee, we will take you to the bathroom."

"No bafwoom. Bafwoom in my house. Not here. It dark here. No bafwoom. Bad boy. No dwink. Mommy cwies."

"Why is Mommy crying?" Susannah pressed.

"Mommy dinks da man tooked me. Daddy day da man tooked me."

"What man, honey?"

"Da man dat picked me up and day he was my daddy."

They all exchanged glances again.
