HAZY SHADE OF WINTER 3 - PART 7
Previously...
Cameron slid out and got into Todd’s face, “You made it quite clear to her that you could care less about her…”
“What goes on between me and MY wife is none of your business,” said Todd.
Todd pushed Cameron aside, reached down and grabbed Téa’s hand, pulling her out of the booth. Brazenly, he walked out of Rodi’s, hand in hand with her, took her to his car, and drove off.
Téa couldn’t believe it. Todd had come to her and she was drunk! She leaned her head on the headrest of the seat, excited that she was in Todd’s car with him. Excited that there was hopefor them.

Roseanne’s apartment,
The next morning…
Téa moaned and rolled over on the bed.
“Oh, my head…” she muttered as she rubbed her eyes and sat up in the bed. She was still wearing last night’s clothes and they reeked of cigarette smells. She looked around a bit, unsure of where she was at and then she realized Todd had taken her to Roseanne’s apartment. She used to share this apartment with Roseanne and this was her old room. Todd. She looked around and saw him sitting in a chair in a dark corner and his eyes were wide open. He was intently watching her.
“Todd…I…” she muttered.
“You what? Your sorry?” he said blankly as he folded his hands in front of him.
She looked down at the bed, “Yeah, I am.”
Abruptly he got up, reached over on an adjacent table and picked up a glass of water. He walked over to Téa, handed her the water and some non-aspirin medication. He sat down on the edge of the bed across from her.
“I figure you might need these…” he said looking at her.
She awkwardly smiled and washed down the medication with her water.
“So Todd, why didn’t you take me home?” she asked.
Todd’s face betrayed nothing, “You were drunk Téa and I couldn’t…bear to take you to our house in your condition.”
“Is there an us?” she asked afraid to pose the question but desperately desiring to know if there was hope for them.
“You tell me Delgado. You’re the one…kissing…other men. You’re the one who was hanging all over rich guy number two at Rodi’s last night. You’re the one…encouraging his behavior,” spat Todd.
“Todd, I was trying to tell him to go away! I was!!” she protested.
“Right,” was all Todd said crossing his arms, “Now get dressed. You’re going for a check-up.”
“A check-up? I got drunk Todd not…”
“Did you forget something Delgado? Like the fact we were trying to get pregnant again?! And you go out on a drinking binge!!” said Todd raising his voice.
Téa lowered her head, ashamed of her action. She ran her hand through her hair, feeling totally defeated. She was just making one screw up after another and she felt like she couldn’t stop it. She felt like she was on an out of control train and she didn’t know how to get off it. She looked up into Todd’s face with tears in her eyes.
“Jesus. Make it stop Todd,” she muttered.
“I can’t make ”it” stop Delgado. Only you can…” said Todd firmly.
“Todd, I want you. I do…Cameron means nothing to me…” she insisted.
Todd shot up off the bed, “Don’t lie to me. We both know he means something to you. He’s your daughter’s father and I’m not! What I don’t understand is that I can put distance between Blair and us. Why can’t you put the same distance between him and us?”
Téa shot up off the bed, “I can Todd. And I will. I promise!!”
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” said Todd coldly.
“How do you know I can’t keep it?!” she said getting in his face.
“You haven’t been very reliable here lately Delgado,” he remarked.
Again, Téa looked at the ground, beating herself up. She was in no position to convince Todd of the sincerity of her words.
Todd didn’t know what to do next. His heart was breaking as much as hers.
“C’Mon, Delgado, let’s go…” he said.
Téa looked up, sad and angry, “What now Todd? Huh? What now? Are you kicking me out of the house since you brought me here?”
Todd was flustered. Part of him wanted to forgive her and just take her into his arms and part of him was so angry with her. He didn’t want her back. He was torn, so torn…
“No. I want you to come back. I want to work this out with you but I want you to act like Delgado again and not some pod person,” he admitted.
She was floored by his words. Before this he would have definitely kicked her out and she realized just how big his heart was when it came to her and it hurt her that much more to realize how she screwed up. She had to make things right! She had too! Only she didn’t know how.
She got up off the bed and walked toward the shower, speechless and unsure of what to say so she said nothing instead.
“Delgado?”
“Yeah?” she said turning around quickly, wanting to make him happy, wanting to please him but not knowing how.
“I…I really want it to work out with us…” he said.
“I do too,” she replied.
Carlotta’s Diner
That afternoon…
Téa walked into Carlotta’s diner and sat down in a booth in the back. After her check-up, Todd had left to go to the Sun and she had stopped by the DA’s office to talk to Hank. They had agreed to meet at Carlotta’s diner later on that day.
Téa just absentmindly stared out the window thinking of the weekend’s events. Her heart had been so sad for Samantha that she allowed her defenses to drop and that let Samantha’s father in.
Cameron Alton had the kind of looks that Téa was typically attracted too. And she knew her weakness. She was predisposed to a physically attractive man. He also seemed like he was a decent guy for the most part. He was a good father to Samantha which really surprised her since Samantha wasn’t his flesh and blood. Cameron was the taboo, the forbidden fruit, a challenge, and she liked that. A challenge. Just as Todd was a challenge so was Cameron in his own way.
She admitted to herself that a part of her was naturally curious about Cameron. And he had a lot in common with Todd.
She looked away and rolled her eyes. Cameron didn’t make her heart race like Todd did. He didn’t thrill her like Todd did. She wanted to be Mrs. Todd Manning.
The blood work on her pregnancy test was due in tomorrow and she knew if she was pregnant Todd would stay with her. But she didn’t want him to stay with her because of a baby. She wanted him to stay with her because of her.
“Téa?”
“Mom?”
Téa looked up. Cameron and Samantha stood next to her table.
“Hh…hi guys. Ah, sit down,” she motioned awkwardly, unsure of herself in Cameron’s presence.
“It’s nothing Samantha. I had a routine check-up today,” she said casually.
“Oh,” said Samantha.
“Are you okay Téa?” asked Cameron. He changed his body posture, softening his face as he looked directly at her. She knew he was aware of her self destructive behavior the previous night and the look on his face told her was concerned.
“I’m…ah, fine,” she awkwardly said, looking away from the table.
Samantha’s eyes grew wide as she realized that her parents were very uncomfortable with each other. She realized that ”something” had happened between them and she could probably guess what that something was since she was aware of her father’s attraction to her mother.
“Do you have something more than a headache?” he asked.
“I’m fine Cameron,” she said, “So, what are you guys up to today?”
“Dad just picked me up from my swimming lesson. I’m learning some new dives,” said Samantha proudly but uncomfortably, reacting to the weird tension between her parents.
Téa smiled picking up on Samantha’s uncomfortableness.
“My daughter, the athlete,” said Téa proudly.
“Samantha’s birthday is coming up in August,” said Cameron.
Samantha smiled, “Yeah! Cool! You can help me plan it Mom!”
“I’d love to sweetie,” gushed Téa.
“Ah, August 2nd is my real birthday, right?” asked Samantha. Samantha put her hands on the table and Téa took Samantha’s hands in hers and looked into her daughter’s soft but confused brown eyes. Eyes that mirrored her own.
“Yes, sweetie, August 2nd is your real birthday,” confirmed Téa. She was lost in her daughter’s eyes, and suddenly flooded with emotion. Téa struggled to fight back tears.
“Where’s Todd?” asked Cameron.
Téa and Samantha looked at Cameron.
“Téa’s husband is right here,” said Todd standing over the booth. His arms were crossed. His face was hard and cold as he looked into his nemesis’s eye’s.
