SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME - ON THE SIDE OF ANGELS

PREVIOUSLY

"….ya know…whatever.." That was the best he could do. The words weren't there, not yet. But he gently brushed his hand across her knee in a gesture so slight it could be argued that it was accidental. The look that accompanied it was all the closing argument that Tea needed, however. The pull had them both firmly in its grasp, and turning back was no longer an option. As one, they leaned back against the sofa and tried to contemplate the power of this thing that had such a strong hold over their hearts, and which seemed to be connecting them beyond a shadow of a doubt.

In the hours that followed, they maintained their vigil in a comfortable silence, each one somewhat lost in their own thoughts and memories. All the while however, they remained equally aware of each other’s presence. The scent of her shampoo was constantly toying with his senses, and his knee making occasional contact with hers made her blush a deep crimson. She casually leaned her head on his shoulder, and, instead of pulling away, he actually inched nonchalantly closer to her. Both Todd and Tea felt a connection in these hours that was deeper than either had ever imagined possible.

It had become almost impossible for him to maintain any kind of distance from her. It had not escaped his attention that the moon light danced over her body in such a way that the angels could not compete with her. It took all his energy not to concentrate on the fact that she was not wearing her usual power suit apparel, but something soft and feminine that seemed to be made to show off her graceful form. It would be so easy to reach over and take her into his arms, and make love to her until their connection was as physical as it was emotional. Something held him back. He knew who she was…the living incarnation of all that was good in his life, but he also feared what someone like him could do to her. Where she was love, he feared that he was only pain, and destruction. He needed to be so much more for her. Slowly, he felt that she was showing him how to do that. She was teaching him that it was already within him, the things he needed to find to really live, once and for all. Still, it had to be right….he had to be sure. Todd feared that if he gave in to the pull of her mystery and her love to soon, it might have terrible consequences for her. It would kill him if he ever did anything to destroy all that was uniquely Tea. He had to be patient….he had work to be done. The promise of what lay on the other side was too strong to be denied as he'd tried to do for so many months. His mind made up to take on the fight of his life….the fight for his life?….he sat back and enjoyed the moments that followed for all that they were, and all that they promised to bring.

Before long, the first light of morning began to break the sky. Tea leaned forward, an expression of rapture on her face, lost in distant memories and a legacy that bonded mother and daughter. As the sun’s rays began to light her face, Todd studied her intently as she gazed at the luminous colors dancing across the skies, silent tears streaming unchecked down her cheeks. So beautiful. He could almost be convinced that she really was his angel, sent down from the heavens. Now he came to realize something vital. He no longer believed that it was her mission to save him. They needed to save each other.

Todd reached out with trembling fingers and lightly touched a strand of her hair. His touch was so light and she was so lost to herself that she was unaware at first. Then she turned to look at him, and again, old habits made him pull away. Her expression was that of a wide-eyed child as she realized that for the first time he had moved to make a connection with her. She took his hand in hers and smiled softly at him when he didn’t pull away. Without words, she brought his hand up and placed it over her heart. Moments passed as they held each other’s gaze and he felt her heart beating a steady rhythm against his hand. In those moments something connected them that went beyond the physical…and was far too deep to be explained in ordinary language.

Tea struggled to come up with the words, ever the lawyer searching for truth and explanation. She wanted so desperately to tell him how special the night had been and what his love and understanding had meant to her.

"Todd, I…."

He stopped her, placing a single finger to his lips. As the rays took full control of the sky, bathing them in a soft pink light, Todd leaned forward and gently kissed her mouth. She needed no convincing; she moved into his arms and returned his kiss with all the pent up love and emotion that she had struggled so long to suppress and all that he had tried to deny.

---Don’t fight love---

This time, both heard the unspoken but very real message.

Somewhere, Tea knew her mother was smiling down on her, the guiding force that she was not able to be in life. Love transcends time and can cross the boundaries between heaven and earth. Todd, too, became aware that some force he had felt abandoned by so long ago was trying to right the wrongs it had brought to his life once upon a time.. Perhaps this new destiny really was his to claim. Destiny had brought him Tea.

She did, indeed, smile down on them.

Two hearts full of hurt that held the secrets to being all the other needed.

They had kept her shaking her head, but always with hope and tightly crossed fingers.

Desperate that they would fight the world together rather than continue to fight each other. But luck, love and destiny were on their sides.

Together, she knew the two lost souls would be okay. They had finally found each other. With time, she was confident that they would unlock all the secrets that were locked away so tight…together they would learn all that life could bring to a pair of soulmates whose connection was part of a plan that came long before an earthly deal was struck between a desperate father and a lonely lawyer waiting for love to find her. She saw something of a rough road ahead of them…their life’s map held so many dips and turns and sudden bends, but always their roads came back into one again. She nodded with conviction…it was her job to see to it that in those times of struggle, that they would never lose sight of each other. Every love written in Heaven’s plan was assigned a Guardian. She prided herself on being the best in the business. Fondly, she left the lovers to their newfound discovery.

In the warmth and safety of his arms, Tea pointed to the radiant flash of pink that suddenly seemed to leap across the sky. Todd was too lost in her wonder to reflect too long on his own. She was real. She was there with him. That was more of a miracle than anything the sky could produce in an early morning performance. Suddenly, a world of darkness seemed bright again. The lost empty feeling had evaporated in the warmth of her kiss, the gentleness of her being. For the first time, Todd was convinced that there might be a heaven for him after all, and that he didn’t have to wait for his life to be over to feel its effects. All he had to do was lose himself in the depths of her eyes, the warmth of her touch, the truth of her love. Destiny had chosen to smile on him who had been a stranger to a smile all his life. He squeezed her hand, and they held on to each other for dear life.

The End
