"The trust card"

Téa: This is starting to feel like home to you, huh?

Todd: Yeah, we were getting something right? I mean like, together. Things were better…a little.

Téa: Maybe.

Todd: Then everything got all kind of crazy when that cop showed up. Okay, I…I went a little crazy.

Téa: Yeah, a little.

Todd: But look, I'm better now, see? And if you say nothing was going on, then-then-then nothing was going on.Oh, look, don't feel special, all right? I don't trust anybody. I'm working on it. I am working on it So…there's just one thing I gotta know. Téa are you sleeping with that guy?

(commercial)

Téa: Am I sleeping with him…

Todd: Yeah that guy, cop or whatever he is…are you sleeping with him?

Téa: This is you trying to trust me?! Forget it. Forget it, Todd.

Todd: Hey, I wanna know.

Téa: How could you think that I would do that to you?

Todd: I don't know…I saw you in bed with him in a motel.

Téa: You said you'd trust me. If you meant it…trust me.

( next episode)

Téa: You really think I'd pick up some cop and go back to his motel room for a quickie?

Todd: I don't know, Delgado. You tell me what to think, all right? You're in the guy's bed…I mean, what is that all about?

Téa: Like I said, either you trust me or you don't. Which is it?

Todd: That's asking a lot.

Téa: Only what I deserve.

Todd: Who is this guy?

Téa: That's irrelevant.

Todd: How am I supposed to trust you when you say things like that?

Téa: (whispered) Goodbye

Todd: Hey…look, just tell me that-that it's not what it looked like, okay?

Téa: It was exactly what it looked like. But I guess that depends on the eye of the beholder. So we're back to what you think of me. Do you trust me, or don't you?

Todd: I'm trying!

Téa: Well, that's not good enough.

Todd: You were in the guy's bed!

Téa: Yes.

Todd: And after…that was after I saw you and Reverend Carpenter…you were hanging all over him at the Palace Bar.

Téa: We were dancing; yes.

Todd: But I'm supposed to trust you.

Téa: Yes.

Todd: How do I do that?

Téa: Maybe you can't.

Todd: What's that supposed to mean? What…are you giving up on me? Are we through?

(commercial)

Téa: The ball's in your court.

Todd: Oh, I hate that. The tennis reference.

Téa: Why, too civilized for you?

Todd: You're the one who's in a seedy motel room with a guy who looks like a bum.

Téa: So why do you wanna be with me? Give me a divorce and be done with it.

Todd: All right, who is this guy…how long… you been with this guy since New York, huh…you been diddling him around, or did you just run into him at the emergency room?

Téa: I'm surprised you didn't drill a hole through the motel room wall. This is sick.

Todd: I didn't think of that. But that's me. I'm sick.

Téa: Oh, don't give me that. I'm Todd, I'm so sick, I'm so crazy, I'm so wacko…. You're normal enough when it comes to your daughter, Starr.

Todd: Starr behaves better than you do.

Téa: Well, maybe you treat her better than you treat me. You're not afraid to love her. You don't push her away when she gets too close to you.

Todd: What are you talking about, huh? I finally do whatever the hell it is you want me to do, and what do you do, huh? You just run off. Who to? What…the saint of Llanview, huh? Dirty Harry? Who else you running around with? You running around with Kevin? Oh, that's right, Kevin can't run around right now, so you're burning toast in his wheelchair, huh? That would be kinky.

Téa: Yeah and I love kinky.

Todd: Is this some kind of test, huh? You get to do whatever the hell it is you want. And me…I just…every time I get a little emotional, you-you get to play the trust card.

Téa: You know, I don't know what to say to you.

Todd: Well, you're the one who's good with words, Delgado.

Téa: You obviously want to believe the worst in me, Todd, so what more is there to say? You *want* to be jealous.

Todd: Should I be?

Téa: Why do I put up with this? Why do I walk away from the most decent, caring, thoughtful man that I have ever met to be treated like this?

Todd: Wh-what did you just say?

Téa: I must be…I must be insane.

Todd: What did you just say?

Téa: Why couldn't he be the one, huh? Why couldn't Andrew be the one? Why am I doing this?

Todd: What does that mean?

Téa: You figure it out because I sure can't.

(commercial)

Todd: So what? You gave up Reverend Andrew and how do I even know you gave up Reverend Andy? All I know is that you say you gave up Reverend Andy.

Téa: That's the way trust works.

Todd: I knew he couldn't handle you.

Téa: It wasn't like that. But you just-you just don't get it, Todd, do you?

Todd: Why, do you have other guys waiting now…obviously…

Téa: Why don't you try to be *really* insulting?

Todd: I don't need to try. So…what…did you just run to the wino cop?

Téa: Ha…are you gonna grill, uh, the checkout boy at the grocery store? How 'bout the guy who delivers the dry cleaning, huh? The mailman…

Todd: What…who….they were *all*, all of them in the motel room?!

Téa: I'm not doing this, Todd. Either you trust me or you don't. If you don't, we have no future. It's up to you.

Todd: (after a long pause) I've never trusted anyone...in my life.

Téa: I'm not anyone. I'm the woman you say you love.

Todd: Whatever. See, I think that gives me…certain rights

Téa: Yeah, the right to believe in me. To believe in us.

Todd: Just tell me there was nothing going on in that motel room.

Téa: Here's the deal. You have to decide that you want me enough to take me as I am. With no conditions. You have to decide, Todd, that you can't live without me, no matter what. Even if I say I had sex with that cop in the motel room. Even if I uh, tell you it was the best…sex I ever had in my life.

(commercial)

(Todd is throwing a fit)

Téa: What…are you going to put your fist through the wall again? That won't solve anything.

Todd: See, I knew you had sex with that guy.

Téa: What is more important to you, the answer to that question, or me in your life?

Todd: Why don't you answer me and I'll get back to you.

Téa: Why don't you trust me?

Todd: What…I'm not supposed to ask questions no matter what flophouse you wake up in?

Téa: That's the deal.

Todd: Ohhhh…Where you going, huh?

Téa: Out of your life?

Todd: Wait…Delgado. I…I want to trust you. I do trust you, but you're making a fool out of me. Okay fine, you go ahead, you-you make a fool out of me…you-you go ahead.

Téa: Guard?

Todd: Wha-wha-what? You're just walking away What…didn't I give you what you want, and you're just gonna…was this all just to jerk me around?

Téa: We made a kind of pledge to each other just now. So I want to show you how this trust thing works. I'm about to put the life of that cop…the one you saw me with… in your hands. One word to the wrong people…and he's a dead man. I'll let him explain.

Officer: Need something?

Téa: Yeah. Would you ask that undercover cop to come inhere, please?

Officer: You mean?

Téa: Delgado, yes.

Todd: What, Del…what…your ex-husband's a cop?

Téa: No. That cop is my brother.
