HAZY SHADE OF WINTER II - PART TWO

“I have to work out a few issues Cam. I have to come to terms with what I did. I won’t sign it until I’m confident I can be the mother she deserves…” replied a shaky Téa.

“I understand,” he said.

There was a silent pause between them. Cameron took his hand, pulled out a hanky and dried his face. Téa dropped her own hand and looked at him with concern.

He stood up after he composed himself, “I’ll send Samantha up.”

“Thank you,” she said lying back down.

He walked out.

The Manning Estate…

Téa took a breath and tried to compose herself. Within minutes, Samantha knocked on the door.

“Come in,” said Téa. Again, she propped herself on the headboard, fighting the pain. She had to look strong, for Samantha.

Samantha walked in and without saying a word, smiled, and ran to the bed, giving her mother a warm and satisfying hug. Téa returned it. They parted and Samantha sat down next to her and held her mother’s hand.

“You don’t look so good. You look pale,” said Samantha softly.

“It’s the pregnancy you know…morning sickness has lingered into afternoon sickness…” said Téa lightly.

“We had a sex ed class in school this year so I know about that…” said Samantha in an all-knowing, all-wise tone of voice.

“You’re just a little smarty, aren’t you?” said Téa lightly.

“No…I’m not that smart…” said Samantha.

“What makes you sat that?” asked Téa.

“I knew…I guess. I mean I knew my Dad really liked you. I caught him staring at your picture a few times…” started Samantha.

“Hey…there’s nothing wrong with that. He was true to his feelings. Samantha, I’m not mad at your father,” said Téa pushing past the pain.

“You’re not? You’re not mad at him? You don’t hate him? He wouldn’t let me see you for a week. And he threatened to take me away from you…?” said Samantha truly confused.

“Samantha, I’m not mad at him. Nor do I hate him. Your father had a good reason not to let me see you for this past week. I did something that I…have to deal with…come to terms with. And I had to at least begin to deal with it before I saw you again…” said Téa honestly and forthrightly.

“What?” asked Samantha.

“I made a suicidal gesture…” said Téa above a whisper, not proud to admit this damning act to her daughter.

“Because of Dad? What he said to you?” said Samantha, her anger growing.

“No…see…it had nothing to do with your father. It was over my feelings of hurt and betrayal that I had concerning my own mother…my doubts about being a mother. Your father is not the problem. It’s me…” said Téa honestly.

Samantha let what Téa said sink in. There was a moment of silence between them.

“I think you’re a good mother,” said Samantha.

“Thank you. Now you know I’m seeing a counselor to work out my problems and I’m on medical leave from my job?” said Téa desperately turning the conversation away from “mothers”. She was not ready to talk about her own mother to Samantha.

“That’s good right? You’ll get better?” asked Samantha.

“That’s good. I want to get better. For you. And the baby…” she answered.

“Why haven’t you signed the custody papers?” asked Samantha, “I want you too, you know…”

“I will. When I’m done with my counseling,” said Téa. It was so hard, fighting the nausea and the pain.

Just then the door opened and Todd walked in. He walked over to the bed and sat down next to Téa and Samantha.

“Hi Todd,” said Samantha.

“Hi Sam,” he replied. His face was full of worry and concern.

“Delgado…Téa…are you all right? You look as pale as a sheet…” whispered Todd tenderly. He made eye contact with her.

“I do, huh?” she asked lightly.

Todd brought his hand to her cheek and gently rubbed his thumbs along her cheekbone.

“Yeah, you do. And you’re warm. Are you running a fever?” he asked.

Samantha intently watched the interaction between them.

Téa nodded her head, ‘yes.’

“I’ll take good care of you. I promise,” he said.

She imitated his gesture along his cheek, “I know you will…”

“I’ll tell you what…Samantha and I will leave you alone so you can rest,” said Todd.

“O.k. Now, Samantha, think about what I’ve said. I’m not mad at your father and I don’t want you to be either…” said Téa rubbing her daughter’s arm.

“I will. I’ll think about it,” said Samantha. She paused, and looked intently at her delicate mother.

“J’Aime Vous,” said Samantha emotionally.

“What does that mean?” asked Téa weakly as Samantha stood up.

“I love you…” whispered Samantha.

“Te quero mija…” said Téa weakly smiling at Samantha.

“What does that mean?” asked Samantha.

“I love you…” whispered Téa.

Todd smiled at their exchange, leaned over Téa, and they exchanged a gentle, passionate kiss that lingered. Their eyes exchanged their words of love.

Todd got up and escorted Samantha out of the bedroom leaving the door open. They walked down the hall and approached the stairs when they suddenly heard a thud and Téa’s voice weakly calling out for Todd. Todd and Samantha rushed back to the bedroom. Cameron and Carlotta, who were waiting at the bottom of the stairs, bolted up and headed for the bedroom…

When Todd ran into the bedroom, the bed was empty. His eyes darted across the room finding the adjoining bathroom. The door was opened and the light was on. He ran into the bathroom. Téa was crunched up on the floor, next to the toilet, clutching her waist. She was conscious but wincing from pain. He knelt beside her, anxious, concerned, and worried.

“Téa…Téa…” he whispered, “What’s wrong…?”

“Todd…I’m cramping…” she muttered. Her face was pale but sweaty. Her skin was cool and clammy to the touch.

He scanned her with his eyes and spotted bloodstains on her pants.

“Oh God! Téa…no!” he whispered passionately.

Carlotta and Cameron ran up behind him and Samantha.

Todd picked her up in his arms and hurriedly rushed out of the room.

“What’s wrong?” asked Carlotta full of concern as Cameron and Samantha intently followed him.

Téa cried out and moaned from the pain.

Todd paused as he prepared to rush out the door, “I think she’s having a miscarriage…” He raced out to his car.

Carlotta, Cameron, and Samantha looked at each other with horror and followed Todd out the door.
