HAZY SHADE OF WINTER 3 - PART 10

“See What’s Become of me…”

Previously...

“Don’t kiss me again. It’s too dangerous for both of us,” she said as she opened the door. Cameron watched her walk out.

Samantha watched her father hang his head. She was confused and didn’t really know what to think. She loved them both deeply and in a way she liked that her father was so protective of her mother. Téa was her mother. And her mother really was a good person. Samantha sighed. She wished it didn’t have to be like this and whatever was going on between her mother and her father would end soon. She turned around, went to her room and cried herself to sleep.

Late that evening…
Llanfair…

Todd knocked on Llanfair’s door hard but it didn’t open right away causing him to become very frustrated. He looked at his watch. So what if it was 11:00 o’clock at night?

Finally the door opened and Viki, wearing pajamas and looking very sleepy stood in front of him.

“Do you realize what time it is Todd?” questioned Viki.

“Yeah. Let me in. I need a place to stay,” said Todd. He was also holding a manila folder.

“Why? What’s wrong Todd?” asked Viki sobering up letting him in.

He walked past her and the den and threw his file on the coffee table. He began to pour himself a drink. Viki sat down on the couch curious as to what was going on, watching Todd take a long satisfying drink.

“Where’s Téa?” asked Viki.

“Téa’s staying with Roseanne,” he said sitting down across from Viki, “So I’m gonna’ need a place to stay.”

“Are you and Téa…breaking up?” asked Viki stunned by his words.

Todd sulked and made a face.

“Todd? What’s happened between you and Téa? Have you…spilt up?” asked Viki again.

“I…I don’t know Viki,” said Todd finally realizing Viki was probably the one person aside from Susannah he could bare his soul to.

“Todd, what happened that weekend?” she asked gently.

“Téa went up to Maine and her and Alton I dunno…decided to explore their feelings…” said Todd sarcastically waving his hand around.

“Téa slept with Cameron?” asked Viki in shock.

“Nah…she says she didn’t and I believe that. But she said she kissed him…she’s got feelings for him…still wants me though. Still loves me. Wants to work things out with me…” continued Todd leaning back on the couch.

“I see. She sounds confused Todd…” added Viki.

“Yeah, well, I don’t know why. I understand her and will always understand her. We’re cut of the same cloth Viki…Alton could never even dream to fathom her like I do,” said Todd smugly.

“So do you want to work things out with her Todd?” asked Viki crossing her arms.

“I don’t like being made a fool of Viki,” he replied.

“And is that what you think Téa’s done to you Todd? Is that why you won’t take her back?” said Viki.

“Me? Téa made the decision to move to Roseanne’s and I won’t go stay in a lonely, empty home without her there,” he protested.

“Sounds like you still want her Todd,” said Viki.

He lowered his head and only raised his eyes to Viki, “I can’t stop it Viki. She’s deep inside me. Deep. And I want to forgive her I do but she’s not giving me a reason.”

“I see,” said Viki.

“She might be pregnant Viki.”

“So you’ll forgive her because she’s pregnant Todd? Shouldn’t you work it out because you love her?”

“I don’t get that Viki. Right now there’s nothing that’s hers and mine. Nothing between us. No glue to hold us together…”

“A child between you is the glue Todd? What about the love you share? What about that glue?” asked Viki.

“It’s pretty thin right now,” said Todd looking up.

“I know it’s scary this “love thing” Todd but if Téa’s made a mistake and says she’s sorry and wants to make things right between you and you love her work it out because you love her…” explained Viki, “If you choose to work it out because she’s pregnant…”

Todd stood up, “Enough all right. What room are you giving me?”

“First one on the right at the top of the steps,” said Viki.

Todd hid his feelings and walked out. Curious, Viki took a peek at his folder. In it was detailed history of Téa’s family – especially her mother. Viki took it and brought it upstairs.

The next day
Llanview General…

Téa paced outside the doctor’s office. Nervous about going in. Nervous about the results, unsure of where she stood with Todd. She had managed to nap during the night but unfortunately that was it. She was restless and worried about her unstable marriage. Todd walked up.

“What are you doing out here?” he asked sliding his hands into his pockets, stopping to look at her. She wore a power suit with a matching short skirt to show off her legs.

“I guess I’m just nervous,” she admitted looking up into his eyes.

“Me too…” said Todd.

Suddenly the door opened and a nurse stepped outside.

“There you two are. We were expecting you. C’Mon in. I have to drop this chart at the nurse’s station but I’ll be right back in,” she explained.

Todd and Téa walked into the reception area. Todd could tell she was antsy. He was himself.

“Todd, what if I’m pregnant? What then?” she said looking at him.

“We’ll make it work,” he said finally.

The nurse walked back in, went into another door where the doctor’s private office was and within a few minutes walked out of the doctor’s office. Téa casually walked up to Todd’s side and slid her arm around his waist. Todd didn’t shun her gesture but he was unsure of how to act.

“I’m sorry Mr. And Mrs. Manning but your test came back negative. Maybe next time,” said the nurse sympathically.

“Next time…” said Todd.

“Oh…” said Téa softly.

“I’ll leave you two alone a minute,” said the nurse.

Todd walked away from Téa, hiding his disappointment.

Téa initially hung her head. She had the impression Todd was disappointed on many levels. Disappointed because he really wanted a baby. She was disappointed herself. She wanted to make Todd happy and right now she couldn’t do that. She wrinkled her brow, finally deciding to give Todd his space. Maybe that’s what they needed – space. She took a deep breath hoping the words would come out right.

“Todd?”

“Yeah?” he said turning around to face her.

“I know you’re hurt. I know I hurt you. And I know I’ve disappointed you. You know, I always thought…I was…I dunno…not cut out for motherhood but I do believe that’s wrong. I’m wrong. I made a mistake but I am determined,” she paused, “absolutely determined to make things right between us and to be the best mother I can be.”

He just stared at her blankly.

“Todd?”

“So? What are you going to do about rich guy number two?” asked Todd crossing his arms.

Téa sighed, “Samantha’s birthday is coming up next week. We’re making plans together but Todd I want you to know I’ve told him no more private meetings. From now on we meet in a public place with other people.”

“It’s a start,” said Todd.

“Will you be there for her party?” asked Téa playing with her hands.

“Sure. I’ll bring Shorty too. She’ll like that…” said Todd, “Look, I need to get going. There’s a hot story at the Sun,” said Todd walking past her.

“Sure. See you later Todd,” said Téa watching him open the door.

“See ya later Delgado,” he replied.

“I will get you back Manning,” said Téa confidently with a smile.
