I TAKE THE DICE - PART SIX

Todd, on his knees, suddenly reached over to Téa, who was also on her knees and pulled her into him. His hands on her face, he leaned into her and began kissing her deeply.

“I couldn’t get you off my mind all day…” he whispered, “I’ve been wanting to do this all afternoon…”

“Amazing coincidence. You were on my mind all day as well…” she replied between his kisses. Enjoy them… relaxing in them.

They knelt before each other, enjoying just kissing on another, accepting each other and their situation.

The Next Day,
The Sun…

Todd came from a staff meeting after lunch and sat down behind his desk in his office, putting his feet up on the garbage can, leaning back in his chair. He grabbed a picture of Starr off his desk and looked fondly at it. How he adored her. It was a shame Fiona had kidnapped her. He was glad Starr was back.

He put Starr’s picture down and looked at Téa’s. She was smiling in a floral print dress. Next to hers, was a picture of him, Téa, and Trevor all wearing Santa hats taken at Christmas time. Recent pictures of the twins dressed up in their Christening clothes had just been added.

Why wouldn’t the damn doctor call with the results? This waiting was driving him crazy!

Kelly walked into his office snapping him out of his thoughts.

“Hey Todd. Viki’s numbers are up,” said Kelly throwing a bunch of papers on his desk.

He looked at her and raised an eyebrow, “Why? What’s Viki got going on that we don’t?”

“Scandal at the governor’s mansion. She also has an interesting story about some stolen Russian egg which is getting a lot of press,” said Kelly.

“Russian egg?” he muttered. Didn’t Téa have one?

“Our libel suit is old news,” added Kelly.

Todd sneered, “Well – get Jed on that governors thing and go dig up some dirt. You know Asa’s soiled something else.”

“Sure,” said Kelly.

Todd stood up abruptly, “I gotta’ go Cramer. If you need me, call me on my cell phone.”

“Sure, Todd. Where are you going?” asked Kelly.

“The hospital,” said Todd walking briskly for the door.

“Why?” asked Kelly.

Todd said nothing as he walked out. He was sick in tired of waiting for the doctor to call him. He was going to get the results himself.

Later that afternoon,
Téa’s Law office…

Nick Kerensky hung up the phone in Téa’s office. She was down at the courthouse filing papers. He had just arranged for depositions with Nora to start the following week.

Téa’s desk was a mess. He went through a stack of papers and found the jeweler’s appraisal. So she was the one entrusted with the egg! He saw a picture of her and a young boy dressed up for Halloween. On the back was written, “Trevor Delgado Manning – age 18 months.” He smiled, thinking of his own young daughter he rarely saw anymore. He picked up a pamphlet that said, “What you should know about childhood hemophilia.” He thought of his own brother and how hemophilia had been passed down through his family. Shrugging off his sentimentality, he picked up the phone again and dialed a few numbers.

“It’s Kerensky.”

Pause.

“Yep. She’s got the egg. The real egg. It’s hard to believe but if you think about it, she’s the obvious choice…” said Nick.

Pause.

“What? Are you crazy? The woman has a family and a career…!”

Pause.

“That was not my job and you know it. My job was to make contact and find out about the egg…”

Pause.

“Look…maybe this will work. I’ll make a fake of the egg and replace the original with the fake and that should keep you happy and her out of danger…” suggested Nick.

Pause.

“We’ll do it my way. It’s a good solution to a bad situation…”

Pause.

“Guess you’ll have to trust me,” said Nick hanging up the phone. He paused and took a deep breath looking around Téa’s office, wondering what she had done with her egg.

That afternoon,
Llanview General…

Dr. Myers watched Fiona pace his office, arms crossed and noticed her posture. She was a bit drained.

“Something is bothering you Fiona. What is it?” asked Dr. Myers.

“Nothing,” said Fiona, “I don’t feel like talking much.”

“You haven’t really talked much…about anything, including your miscarriage,” said Dr. Myers.

Fiona stopped and glared at Dr. Myers, “What do you want me to say?”

“I don’t necessarily want you to say anything. I want you to feel something,” said Dr. Myers looking intently at her.

“What do you want me to feel? I didn’t want to get pregnant. My son was an accident. And then I lost him in a damn accident – the only thing that could have…! A damn accident! Everything about my son was an accident and to boot…I don’t…” Fiona paused as she realized she was yelling. Realizing she was feeling something but didn’t know what.

Myers stood up, “You don’t…what?”

Fiona bit her lip.

“You don’t what, Fiona?” pushed Myers.

“Damn it! I don’t know who his father was!” yelled back Fiona.

“What?” exclaimed Myers, “How could you not know?”

Fiona hung her head.

“Fiona I thought Kevin was the father…” said Dr. Myers, “Despite your implication that Todd Manning was. You and Kevin…Kevin Buchanan is still here for you. He’s one of your strongest supporters.”

Fiona finally broke down and stumbled toward a chair, her whole body shaking, “I’ve done some horrible, horrible…terrible things… and the innocent life of a child…my child…my baby paid for them…” she sobbed bringing her hands up to her face as she slid off the chair and fell to her knees.

Myers ran up to her and faced her, “What else have you done Fiona? You can talk to me. Anything you tell me, I can’t repeat.”

“I don’t…want to lose Kevin…” muttered Fiona through her tears.

“Talk to me Fiona!” said Myers.

“I hurt Kevin. I hurt Todd and his family. And I just want to make it right for my son…for Theodore…” sobbed Fiona, “So his death…isn’t in vain…”

“Get a hold of yourself Fiona!” said Myers grabbing her wrists and looking into her eyes.

Fiona’s whole body was trembling, “I don’t want to go to jail. I got a new job you know…”

“Why Fiona? Does jail scare you?” asked Myers, “I can still see you in jail you know.”

“No…no…you don’t understand, I’ve got to make it right for my son. His…death…something good has to come out of it – for him…” cried Fiona, “And I can’t do it in jail. Don’t you see?”

Myers felt a knot in his stomach, “Get a hold of yourself Fiona!”

She took a deep breath. Tears flowed onto her shirt.

“Fiona, are you truly sorry? How would you make up for things?” asked Myers.

“I want to tell everyone I’m sorry…Kevin…Todd…Joey…” said Fiona trying to compose herself.

“Who is Joey?” asked Myers confused.

Fiona gasped for breath, “Kevin’s family…Viki…Asa…he’s been so good to me…”

“Fiona, how would…you…say I’m sorry to all these people?” asked Myers. There was so much he wanted to talk to her about.

“I’d say I’m sorry…” she said pulling her hands away and wiping her eyes on her sleeves.

Myers stood up and went over to his desk and wrote out a prescription.

“Fiona, look at me,” he commanded.

Fiona looked up at him. Her face was red.

“What?” she muttered.

“I wrote you a prescription for some anti-depressants. I’m going to give it to your lawyer who’s waiting for you. I want you to follow my prescription. Understood?”

Fiona nodded her head.

“Look, I want you to come back tomorrow after you’re a bit more composed. We have a lot to talk about,” he said firmly.

She nodded her head.

“I need to talk to your attorney for a bit about the pills all right,” said Myers.

“All right,” said Fiona.

Myers escorted Fiona to the door and called Nora into his office. Nora, looking a little confused, went into his office. Fiona waited outside the door.

“She’s red in the face. Has Fiona been…crying?” asked Nora in shock.

“Yes. She finally let out the grief over her miscarriage. I’ve prescribed an anti-depressant. But there’s something else…” he whispered.

“Oh, really?” asked Nora raising her eyebrow.

“When is Fiona’s sentencing?” asked Myers.

“Two days from now,” said Nora, “Why?”

“I want to speak on Fiona’s behalf. I don’t want her to go to jail. She’s finally starting to open up to me and I’m afraid if she goes to jail, she’ll close down on me again,” explained Myers.

“You mean, you think…Fiona’s …sincere?” questioned Nora.

“Yeah, I do. She’s finally leveling with me and I don’t want to jeopardize it,” said Myers firmly.

Nora nodded her head, amazed at this development.

Todd closed the door and stepped out into the busy hospital hallway. He closed his eyes and bit his lip. Disappointed. He was so…disappointed. He really wanted Téa to be pregnant, but she wasn’t. He took a breath. He was going to make it special anyway. Flowers. A gift. The new house key. A fancy Dinner. And a speech as to why they should have another child. hehe… that’s it …he’ll talk her into having another child…hehehe… He started walking down the hall.

“Téa, guess what? Nah…to…corny. Téa, you’re not – but you could be again… nah, she won’t buy that. It’s gotta be slick. I gotta be slick about it. Téa – I’m not scared to have more kids…and you don’t have to be either…”

Bump.

Todd looked to his side. Someone had run into him.

“Nora! And…you…” muttered Todd sneering at Fiona.

Fiona looked at Todd and said nothing.

Only Nora stood between Todd and Fiona. The air had a bitter chill to it.

Fiona swallowed, “Todd, I just want to say…”

“Don’t say a damn word to me,” said Todd. He walked off, clenching his fists.

Fiona followed him with her eyes. Nora watched Fiona intently.

Later…

Todd went to the Banner. As he approached Viki’s door he heard laughing and giggling. He slowly peered inside. Viki, Jessica, and Joey were throwing toilet paper at each other. Todd walked in.

“Whoda’ thunk it. Prim and proper Victoooria Loord Carpenter playing with toilet paper,” grinned Todd holding up a roll.

“Uncle Todd!” exclaimed Jessie grinning, “Lighten up. You look like someone…I dunno…stole your dinner fork or something.”

“C’Mon Jess. You know Uncle Todd eats with his hands!” laughed Joey still in a good mood.

Todd rolled his eyes.

Viki took off a strand of toilet paper from her shoulder, “What brings you over here Todd? The chance to let me gloat about my numbers compared to the Sun’s?”

“No,” said Todd, “I need a favor.”

“Oh?” asked Viki, “Well, just so I get it in now – My numbers are better than your numbers this week.” She grinned.

Todd grunted, “Whatever. Look, I wanna do this special dinner thingie with Téa tonight. Just her and me. Would you watch the kids tonight?” asked Todd crossing his arms trying to act invulnerable.

“Romantic evening Uncle Todd?” asked Jessie smiling.

Joey laughed, “Him?”

“I don’t do romance,” said Todd scowling.

“Of course not, Todd. Not you,” said Viki grinning, “It would ruin your reputation. Of course I’d watch the kids tonight.”

“Cool,” said Joey, “Roseanne and I haven’t moved out yet and I love spending time with the kids.”

“What time do you want me come over and pick them up?” asked Viki.

“Five will be just fine Sis. Téa’s due home at six,” said Todd.

“Hey is it all right if I come get them?” asked Joey.

“As long as you take right to Llanfair…” said Todd with mock worry.

“Todd, did you hear? Fiona Braxton got a job with Tempo magazine working for Brooke English,” said Viki evenly.

Todd looked at Viki, “I saw that…thing…at the hospital today. Wanted to say something to me but I just walked away.”

Joey swallowed, “You saw Fiona?”

“Yep,” said Todd.

Joey looked away.

“Why? She claiming you slept with her too?” asked Todd sarcastically.

“Me. No. I’m with Roseanne. Besides, she and Kevin got a thing…” stammered Joey.

“Poor you Viki. Better watch out Fiona doesn’t add…Buchanan to her name,” grinned Todd.

Viki frowned, “Kevin knows better.”

Todd picked up a roll of toilet paper and threw it at Viki, “Hope you left some for the employee’s bathroom…” He laughed as he walked out.

The rest of Todd’s afternoon was busy. He went to the country club and arranged for a catered diner to be delivered. His next stop was the florist where he ordered several dozen peach, white, and red roses for the house. He also stopped by the real estate agent and found out his new house was ready to move into at anytime. He picked up a few copies of the new house keys.

Todd also stopped by the jewelers and picked up the special gift he’d been eyeing for a while. As he arrived home, the florist was all ready decorating the house. He dismissed the nannies and explained to his inquisitive son, Trevor, that this was another one of those special “Mommy/Daddy” occasions and that he would be staying with Viki, Jessie, Joey, and Rosie. Trevor was sad but when Joey and picked him up they had a little toy for him which helped to cheer them up.

The caterer arrived and began setting up. Todd set out a few candles and in the middle of Téa’s dinner plate he placed a single peach rose, his gift, and copy of the new house key. Everything was perfect. He looked at his watch as the caterer’s left. 5:45 pm. Téa would be home at any minute. Romantic his ass! Téa liked this girlie stuff every so often…Yeah! This was girlie stuff!

He paced the living room, anxious for Téa’s arrival, as he played with his hands. The doorbell rang. Damn caterers! What did they forget? He swung open the door, coming face to face with…Fiona.

With an air of confidence, Fiona sauntered past him into the house.

Todd sneered.
