I TAKE THE DICE - PART EIGHTEEN

“Get a grip Todd. You losing control is not going to help Téa or Trevor. Just wait until Bo is done talking to her,” said Viki firmly.
“I’m not a patient man Viki. You know that,” replied Todd.
“Well you better acquire some now before you do something rash that only helps to tear your family apart instead of bringing it together,” said Viki wisely.
Todd said nothing and stomped out of the squad room in a fury. Viki looked at Tina and the followed him.

Llanview Police Station,
The integration room…

Téa was alone. She leaned up against one of the walls in the room trying to hide her nervousness and trying to show her courage. She was tough. She was strong. And she did not kill Nick Kerensky. But she had lied to Todd about the reason she went to her office and she didn’t look forward to dealing with that lie.

The door opened and Bo, Hank, and Det West walked in. Téa picked at her denim collar. Bo stood next to the table in the room while Hank and Det. West took a seat.

“Want a seat Téa?” asked Bo.

“No,” she answered quickly.

“You might feel more comfortable Téa,” said Bo studying her.

“Nothing could make me feel comfortable. I’ve been fingerprinted, dusted, taped, and striped of my clothes. I feel like a suspect in a murder investigation Bo,” she said showing her brave, tough face.

“You are a material witness Téa. I’m not advising you of your rights,” said Bo firmly.

“I should have counsel in here representing me,” she said. Her voice finally betrayed her nervousness.

“You’re a lawyer Téa. You think you need one right now?” asked Hank.

Téa paused and played with her fingers, “I know I’ve done nothing wrong.”

“So talk to us Téa. Tell us what the hell happened in your office tonight,” said Bo pleading with her.

“I didn’t kill Nick Bo. I found him bleeding to death in my office. I tried to save his life,” said Téa choosing her words carefully.

“Why was Kevin there Téa?” asked Bo.

“I don’t know,” answered Téa honestly.

“Were you and Mr. Buchanan having an affair?” asked Det. West.

“What?! That’s preposterous!! I’m a married woman in love with my husband!” said Téa her voice betraying her anxiety.

Hank pushed Téa, “You don’t know why Kevin was there?”

“No, Kevin didn’t tell me. And I didn’t ask him. I’m curious myself but at the time I had other things on my mind. Like Nick bleeding to death in my office,” said Téa sarcastically.

“You were at the Banner party with Todd. Why did you leave and go to your office without him?” asked Bo, very curious as to her answer.

Téa opened her mouth and closed it, pausing, carefully picking her words, “I wanted to get a file I forget for a court case I have tomorrow.”

“Téa, there’s something you should know,” said Bo crossing his arms.

“What?” asked Téa.

“Most likely your court case will be postponed. Nora gave birth tonight,” he said softly.

Téa softened, “I didn’t know. Congratulations Bo.”

“Thanks,” said Bo.

“Why couldn’t you pick this file up in the morning?” asked Hank taking notes.

Téa again hesitated, “I knew I wouldn’t have the time. The twins and Trevor keep me busy in the morning.”

“Did you know Nick was going to be there?” asked Hank.

“No,” said Téa lying.

“Téa, what happened when you walked in your office?” asked Det. West.

“I saw Nick bleeding. I moved the gun – threw it aside and tried to think of what I should do. I was in shock. Then Kevin walked in. I asked him to help me,” explained Téa trying to keep her answer short and brief.

“Did you notice the phone off the receiver?” asked Hank.

“No,” said Téa.

“Did you call 911 Téa?” asked Bo.

“No. I didn’t have time too. I didn’t think to do that,” she replied.

“Did Nick say anything to you, perhaps?” asked Hank.

Téa swallow, “He kept saying I’m sorry. I didn’t understand. I still don’t. I don’t know why he was saying that.”

“Did he say anything else? Who shot him?” asked Bo.

“No,” answered Téa.

“There were two Faberge eggs found at the scene exactly alike. Did you own them?” asked Det. West.

Téa laughed, “No. I only own one.”

“How did you come to own a Faberge egg?” asked Hank.

“Someone gave it to me in Puerto Rico. I don’t own two – I swear. Only one. I had it appraised so I knew it was real,” explained Téa.

“What were you going to do with it?” asked Bo.

“I don’t know. I never gave it much thought. Honestly, I could care less about it,” said Téa letting out a deep breath.

“Todd’s outside. Waiting for you,” said Bo finally.

“I know. He’s upset. Scared,” replied Téa.

“How do you know?” asked Bo.

“I know Todd,” she answered quickly.

“Detective West is going to take your statement. Then I’ll release you…to go home,” said Bo.

“Sure,” said Téa.

Bo turned to Hank who got up. They walked out and stopped right outside the interrogation room door.

“What do you think?” whispered Hank.

“Téa’s hiding something. But I do think she’s being honest as to what happened in her office once she got there. I just don’t believe her reason why she was there. I’ll know more when I get my physical evidence reports back,” said Bo whispering back to Hank.

Hank nodded his head and motioned for Bo’s office. They walked off.

Det. West got up from the table and walked out of the integration room. Téa continued to sit at the table, staring blankly at the wall across from her. What was she going to tell Todd. He was going to demand answers. The opened door and Todd walked in followed by Tina. Téa shot up out of her seat and run into Todd’s shaking arms.

“Todd! Thank God!! I need you! I’m so glad you’re here!” she exclaimed.

Todd wrapped his shaking arms around her, “Delgado…Téa…what happened tonight?”

Téa pulled away and looked into his eyes, “Todd! I swear I didn’t kill him!! You believe me, don’t you?”

Tina said nothing, preferring to stay close to the door. She crossed her arms and studied the dynamic between her brother and his wife.

“I do. I believe you. Why was Kevin in there in your office tonight?” asked Todd looking back into her eyes.

“I don’t know. He just showed up. He helped me try to save him,” said Téa.

Tina quickly spoke up, “I’ll find out Todd and give you some private time with your wife.”

Todd turned to Tina, “How?”

“I have my ways. I’ll be back in a bit,” said Tina. She opened the door and left.

Todd turned back to look at Téa, “I don’t like this. I don’t like why you left like you did. I don’t like you here. I don’t like seeing you in…dressed in blue.”

“Todd, I’m sorry…” whispered Téa. She choked back tears.

“I’m afraid Delgado. I’m afraid for us,” said Todd looking into her eyes.

“Don’t be,” said Téa through tears.

Todd gently took her hand and brought it up to his cheek. She stared into his eyes. He felt that she was hiding something. She was afraid of something.

The door opened and Tina walked in. Todd and Téa broke off their intense eye contact and looked at Tina.

“What did you find Tina?” asked Todd.

“Kevin said he thought he was following a woman named Fiona. Fiona Braxton,” said Tina.

Todd grew angry, “What?!”

Téa was stunned, “Madre Dios!”

“So who is Fiona Braxton?” asked Tina.

“She’s a long story,” said Todd, his voice was tight with anger.

“I’ve got all night,” said Tina.

“Still ain’t long enough,” spat Todd.

Téa grew limp in Todd’s arms and he strengthened his arms around her.

“Fiona? But I didn’t see her there. Fiona wasn’t there,” said Téa.

“Téa, you know Fiona hates us. Hates you. For being my wife,” said Todd turning back to her.

“I know,” said Téa confused by this new bit of information.

Tina crossed her arms, “Todd, so what? Women can’t get enough of you? Are you Llanview’s answer to Fabio or something?”

“That’s not funny Tina. I’m not attractive. Fiona is sick,” said Todd.

“Right,” said Tina.

Téa’s voice grew hard and cold, “Todd, Fiona is involved in this. She’s screwing with us again.”

“I will protect you Téa. I will find the truth. I will. Now let’s go home. Get you out of those repulsive clothes,” said Todd.

Téa nodded her head, “We’ll find the truth…together.”

Todd, Téa, and Tina walked out.
