THE BODEGA SCENES

A very big thank you to Louise who went to all
the trouble to transcribe these scenes.....*S*

*****************************************************************                  Scene: a Bodega on the waterfront in Llanview, PA

(Tea is speaking with Ramon, the owner of a Spanish grocery store)

Ramon:  Your husband is a lucky man.  My wife hardly ever cooks
for me any more.

Tea:  Actually, I'm afraid I'll be eating alone.  My husband
isn't interested in Spanish food.  Spicy things make him nervous.

Ramon:  Having in his house, delicious food cooked by a
beautiful woman and he doesn't appreciate it?  What's wrong
with him?

Tea:  Ah believe me it would take me till closing time to tell
you.

Ramon:  We're open all night.

Tea:  Even so…(smiling, thinking of Todd)

Ramon:  Get down Senora.  Don't turn around!

Tea:  What's wrong?

Ramon:  We've had some robberies in the neighborhood lately
and I don't like the looks of this man who just came in.
(He picks up a baseball bat, holds it up and says:  Drop it!

Todd:  (turning around, holding lip balm) Don't want my lips
to get chapped!

(Tea shakes her head as Todd uses the balm on his lips)

Scene 2  Same Location

Tea:  You almost gave us a heart attack!

Todd:  Me?  I did?  He almost clobbered me for using lip balm.
You know if this is how you say hello to all your customers, it's no
wonder this place is empty.

Ramon:  (string of vehement Spanish)

Todd:  Same to you!!

Tea:  (impatiently)  What are you doing here anyway, Todd?

Todd:  (sheepishly)  Followed you.

Tea:  You what?

Todd:  Yeah - I don't know - I was bored.  You know Starr fell
asleep and the babysitter, she wouldn't shut up, she kept going on
about White House interns and some movie about a boat that won't sink.  (half
smiling)  I think I'd have a better conversation with Moose.

Tea:  Well then maybe you should have hung out with him instead
of sneaking up on me.

Todd:  I didn't sneak up.  I just walked in.  (indicates Ramon)
Talk to him.  He's the one who's jumpy.

(Ramon and Tea exchange words in Spanish about Todd.  Meanwhile
Todd tries one of the items in Tea's basket of food, makes a face and
wipes his eyes.)

Todd:  All right, that's enough of the salsa speak.  Cause I
don't understand.

Tea:  Well too bad.  Cause we're not salsa speaking to you.

Todd:  Yeah, but you're talking about me.  Right?  You're
talking about me.  I can tell that.

Tea:  Well if you're really interested take a language course,
then you can monitor my every word.

Todd:  So what are you doing here anyway?

Tea:  I had a sudden urge to get back to my roots.  I thought
I'd cook a Spanish dinner.

Todd:  Great!  Hurry up!  I'm hungry!

Tea:  Since when do you like Spanish food?

Todd:  (looking like he'd like anything so long as it was with
her) I never said I didn't.

(Tea says something in Spanish to Ramon, who laughs)

Todd:  Say now what is that?  What did you just say?

Tea:  Oh, I told him you were following me to check if I went to
see Andrew but you didn't have the guts to admit it.

Scene 3  Same location

Todd:  (defensively)  I'm bored already, why would I go look
for Andrew?

Tea:  (angrily, and loosening her scarf to reveal a necklace)
No, no, no, Todd it's alright you don't have to cover.  The jig is up!
(calling out)  Andrew, Andrew come out from behind the frijoles, Todd
caught us red handed.

Todd:  You're no good at harassing me.

Tea:  Oh - harassing you?  Who followed whom?

Todd:  Whom?  All right, look - I wasn't bored.  I wanted to
see you.

(Tea looks pleased)  It's supposed to be a trial
reconciliation right? But we can't have a trial anything if you keep running
off like that.

Tea:  Running off?  I came to the grocery store.  Maybe
you need to give me one of those ankle bracelets that sends out a signal?
  (ironic, isn't it?)

Todd:  (with mock seriousness)  You'd wear one?  Cause I got
one.  I broke it.  (laughing)

Tea:  Todd, it's not funny, it's not funny.  I told you flat
out I moved back in to speed up the divorce and this is just the kind of
event that makes me think I was right to want that.

Todd:  Hey!

Tea:  Why would I reconcile with a man so paranoid that
he spies on me? A man so afraid of himself he takes pictures of me when I'm
sleeping?

Todd:  No, no, no, I explained about the pictures, Tea. (he
spots her necklace and picks it up) 'A' for Andrew?  (angry and VERY hurt
, he leaves and she races after him.  He bumps into Del, says "watch

where you're going", and storms off.

                      Scene 4  On the waterfront

(Tea approaches Todd, touches his arm and whispers his name.
  He walks away.)

Tea:  'A' is for…

Todd:  Thought it would be scarlet.

Tea:  No, 'A' is for Anna.

Todd:  Who's Anna?

Tea:  That was my mother's name.  This medallion is hers.
My father kept it as sad and angry as he was when she left.

Todd:  (looking relieved)  So, It's not Andrew's?

Tea:  No.  When we found that she'd died he gave it to me.
I was 7 years old.  I wore it to my 1st communion.  It's the only
thing I have left of her.

Todd:  (turns to her, reaches for the necklace and says
softly..) Sorry.

Tea:  (whispers)  That's alright.

(As Todd hands the medallion back to her it falls -
plop into the Lantano River while both watch dumbstruck.)

Scene 5   Same location

Todd:  OK, you're right.  I'm sorry.  I'm sorry I was clumsy.

Tea:  No, no.  It's OK, it's just a thing.

Todd:  No, it's not. It's a thing, yeah, but it's probably
the only thing in the world that you care about.

Tea:  No.  Honestly.  It…(Todd empties his pockets, hands her
his wallet and keys, takes off his jacket.  She is horrorstruck.)
What are you doing?

Todd:  I'm going to go get it.  (THIS IS THE GUY WHO CARES
FOR NOTHING AND NOBODY NOW?  NOT)

Tea: Don't you dare Todd.  I mean it!

Todd:  You said it's the only thing you got left that
your Mum gave you, right?

Tea:  Yes.  But you're crazy, it's not worth it.  (He
leaps into the water and she screams after him…)  Todd!!!

Scene 6  Same location

Tea:  (alone on the dock, screaming, distraught)  Oh God.
Please answer me.  Todd!  Todd!!  (she grows more and more desperate)
Somebody help!!  HELP!!  Can anyone hear me?  My husband just fell
into the water.  (she runs screaming)  Todd!  (she throws an empty
crate into the water)  I'm going to throw in this crate.  Hold on to it
till I can get someone.  Todd!!  Todd!!  (now pleading, nearly incoherent)
Please, please answer me Todd.  Answer me!!  Help! Help!  Oh God!!
(now she becomes angry)  Todd!!  Todd!!  HOW STUPID!  (starting to
whimper)  Oh Todd!  No, no, no, no, not like this.  No no.  (water begins to
drip down on her from above and she raises her tear stained eyes up
and sees Todd, dripping wet, holding out the medallion.

Todd:  Your necklace!  (so proud of himself)

Scene 7  Same location

Tea:  Oh my God, you're OK.  Didn't you hear me screaming?

Todd:  Yeah.  (smiling)

Tea:  Why didn't you answer me?

Todd:  I had a mouth full of water.  (He spits some out.)

Tea:  This is your idea of a joke?

Todd:  Yeah, yeah.  Why you so upset?  (This guy doesn't
have a clue)

Tea:  I was scared Todd.

Todd:  What?  That I was alive or that I was dead?

Tea:  YOU…….YOU…(she hits and punches him)

Todd:  OW!  What, what, me what?  TROLOGDYTE?  That's what
you were going to say.  I know what that means because somebody
called me that once and I looked it up and it's pretty much true.

Tea:  (now hitting and punching him ferociously with both
hands)  This is not funny.

Todd:  Hey, you're repeating yourself.  Cut it out.  (she
continues to pummel him, he then yells..)  CUT IT OUT!  (he grabs her hands
)  Calm down.

Tea:  Of all the dumb, crazy…don't you ever do that to me
again.

Todd:  Hey, hey, hey, calm down.  I was swimming all right?
I'm not dead.  Come on, I'm not worth all this.  (meanwhile Tea is
looking at him realizing again just how much she adores this impossible
man)  You keep hitting me, I'm gonna drop this thing and you're going to
have to go get it.

(He holds out the necklace towards her and she clutches his hand
in both of hers and kisses it fervently)

Todd:  Come on, cut it out.  You're going to make me do all
the work aren't you?  (He untangles the necklace as she watches.  Then
he gently places it around her neck, lifts her hair and smoothes it
back)  There's your mother's necklace, all right?  (lovingly, softly)

Tea:  (nods)

Todd:  You ok?  (as he turns to pick up his shoes she clasps
the necklace, grateful for it but realizes how much it could have
cost her. And now it has even greater significance than just a memory of
her mother.)

Scene 8  Same location

Tea:  you must be freezing.

Todd:  First you beat me up, now you're worried about me?

Tea:  Thanks for getting this back.

Todd:  You're welcome.  (He zips up his jacket)

Tea:  When you were ah.. not answering me, were you…

Todd:  I always wondered what it would be like to drown.
I don't think it would be that bad.

Tea:  You weren't scared?

Todd:  Nah!

Tea:  I was.  They say you see your whole life go by in
the last few seconds, you know before you die.

Todd:  You know I never understood that, right?  I mean how
do they say that, I mean who do they say that to because when you go
it's not like you come back, right?

Tea:  I felt like it was me under the water (nodding,
realizing)  and the life I saw go by was the one I hadn't lived yet.

Todd:  (smart ass)  Was it colour, or was it black and white?

Tea:  Actually, it was pretty bleak.

Todd:  All right, next time I'll tell you what, you jump
in and get the jewelry.

Tea:  But then when I saw you over me, standing, dripping,
I felt like I had been given another chance.

Todd:  I feel like I got a new lease on life too.

Tea:  like someone had turned off the light, you know and
then turned it on again.

Todd:  (shivering)  What are you talking about, Delgado?

Tea:  Oh my God, you'll get pneumonia.

Todd:  No.  Oh look. I see a light.  (Tea laughs)

Tea:  That's a street light.  I'm going to get my purse.
You need help.  (she retrieves her purse)

Todd:  That's what Vicky says, she says that all the time.
(As they leave Tea follows him protectively)

Tea:  Well come on.  I'm not going to let you die now.

Todd:  Good old Tea!
